{"id":110,"date":"2012-09-01T18:46:54","date_gmt":"2012-09-01T18:46:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/photogravure.intaglioeditions.com\/?p=110"},"modified":"2012-09-02T01:19:21","modified_gmt":"2012-09-02T01:19:21","slug":"monoprints-vs-monotypes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/photogravure.intaglioeditions.com\/index.php\/monoprints-vs-monotypes\/","title":{"rendered":"Monoprints vs Monotypes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monoprints are prints made using an etched plate, but inked in different ways.\u00a0 Not to be confused with monotypes, which do not generally use a plate or matrix, monoprints can be made in variable editions &#8211; meaning made the same but with some differences among each print in the edition &#8211; or one-of-a-kind, like monotypes.\u00a0 Monotypes differ from Monoprints in that there is no matrix, and is more freeform where ink is applied directly to a piece of unetched plexiglass or other material and printed.\u00a0 Some monotype techniques include using mylar or other material to mask off and even pick up ink from certain areas of the plate for subsequent monotype printings.\u00a0 Monotypes are truly one-of-a-kind pieces since there is no &#8220;permanent&#8221; plate matrix, and none of the forms and color blending can really be repeated the same way again.\u00a0 They are, in effect, paintings done on a press.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118\" style=\"width: 318px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photogravure.intaglioeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/snapdragon2-jonlybrook300dpi2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118\" class=\"size-full wp-image-118\" title=\"Snapdragon 2 - monotype by Jon Lybrook\" src=\"http:\/\/photogravure.intaglioeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/snapdragon2-jonlybrook300dpi2.jpg\" alt=\"Snapdragon 2 - monotype by Jon Lybrook\" width=\"308\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photogravure.intaglioeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/snapdragon2-jonlybrook300dpi2.jpg 308w, https:\/\/photogravure.intaglioeditions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/snapdragon2-jonlybrook300dpi2-184x300.jpg 184w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snapdragon II &#8211; monotype by Jon Lybrook courtesy of the Will Witman collection.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Recently I met printmaker Julia Lucey from California who works exclusively with <strong>monoprints<\/strong> using traditionally etched copper plates.\u00a0 Her etchings alone are wonderfully rich and detailed, but she doesn&#8217;t stop there.\u00a0 She layers her prints with multiple plate impressions creating a cubist-like ensemble of pieces that make up the whole.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 518px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/julialucey.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Julia Lucey Monoprint\" src=\"http:\/\/julialucey.com\/yahoo_site_admin\/assets\/images\/IMG_2694.184123136_large.JPG\" alt=\"Julia Lucey Monoprint\" width=\"508\" height=\"437\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julia Lucey Monoprint<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Julia gives a succinct <a title=\"Explanation of Copperplate etching\" href=\"http:\/\/julialucey.com\/the_etching_process\" target=\"_blank\">explanation of traditional copperplate etching<\/a> on her website.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Jon Lybrook Fine Art Printmaking\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.jonlybrook.org\/original-fine-art\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Anti-Devil by Jon Lybrook\" src=\"https:\/\/secure.jonlybrook.org\/original-fine-art\/images\/anti-devil.jpg\" alt=\"Anti-Devil\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anti-Devil Monoprint by Jon Lybrook<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Photogravure Polymer plates can likewise be used for monoprints in this same manner.\u00a0 This piece was done all on one plate, which I first wiped clean with blank ink, then effectively painted over using colored inks.\u00a0 Unlike traditional etching, photoshop can be used to superimpose or manipulate the artwork before the plate is made. This is also considered one of the disadvantages of polymer in that it is difficult to do much to rework the plate with much precision once it has been created because it is made of plastic. Still, there are things one can do with polymer for creative effects, such as scratching it with sandpaper, mottling it with water, or &#8220;drawing&#8221; into it with a soldering iron.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to monoprints vs monotypes, the bottom line is they are both beautiful printmaking techniques.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just a matter of whether or not the printmaker wishes to use or reuse an etched, drypoint, or polymer photogravure plate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Monoprints are prints made using an etched plate, but inked in different ways.\u00a0 Not to be confused with monotypes, which do not generally use a plate or matrix, monoprints can be made in variable editions &#8211;
